Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
